What should I expect if I’ve never done this before?
I’m here to support, coach, and motivate you towards your goal of a more streamlined and functional space or schedule. Because clients work at different paces, “success” will look different for each person. Some appointments involve more listening/planning and some appointments are more about activating the plan. Please don’t try to clean up before the first session, because it helps to see things the way they currently are to figure out what is or isn’t working.
Will I have to throw things away?
I am respectful of your space and belongings and you will always have control over what happens to them. However, reducing the amount of things in a home is often a very important and helpful first step in the organizing process, so my goal is to motivate you to throw/donate according to your comfort level. I can also make suggestions for where to donate, if requested. The final decision is yours.
Do I need to be there?
Yes: both physically and mentally, please! Organizing is a transferable skill, so it’s important that we work together to create solutions that are sustainable in the long term. It greatly helps to have your undivided attention, so I respectfully ask that you have a plan for someone else to take care of any children/pets/distractions if possible.
Will it be difficult?
Change is hard. Most things worth doing require an investment of time, money and energy. If you’re willing to make a lifestyle change in your relationship with your belongings and your time, I’ll help you figure out a path to simplifying your space and your life.
Why do I feel anxious or embarrassed about someone seeing my space?
Our society places a high value on being tidy and organized; sometimes equating it to a moral virtue. Have you ever heard the saying, “cleanliness is next to Godliness”? In reality, feeling disorganized or having a cluttered space is not a personal or moral failing – it’s just something to be solved if it bothers you or interferes with daily living. In the same way you might outsource the things you don’t enjoy or have the time/talent for (e.g. personal trainer, meal delivery, landscaper or dog walker), a professional organizer can ease the burden at home. So, let go of any embarrassment because I’m not judging you!
Do I have to buy new furniture/storage?
I can work creatively with what you already have, although sometimes I make suggestions for things that could improve the function of your home. Many clients already have a vast collection of containers and storage options, but need help to use them efficiently or reduce the amount of stuff being stored in them. In certain situations more containers are helpful, but often they’re not necessary.
Do I have to commit to a number of sessions?
No, I’m happy to help you for as long or little as you need. Be aware that if you’re downsizing after many years or need a slower pace to make decisions, then the process will take more time.
How long does each meeting take?
It’s your choice, but the average session is 2-3 hours. It gives us enough time to get into a project in some depth, but not too much time that you’ll be completely exhausted by the end of it. We can discuss what works best for your situation.
Is it confidential?
Yes; always confidential! I will never discuss or release any of your identifying information, photos or details without your permission, unless required by law.
Comments/concerns?
If you loved my work, please refer me to friends! If something didn’t feel right, please let me know directly so I can address your concerns. Being willing to give me feedback during a session is always helpful.
